Like many, I have eclectic music tastes. I can jump from Eminem to The Grateful Dead to Rod Stewart and everything in between. My favorite artistically is the Talking Heads and has been for more than 30 years if that tells you anything. And while I used to listen to the same variety at work (I do a lot of data digging alone so it’s not an issue…) several months back I gave up trying to match my mood with just the right set and settled on one tried and true genre to get me through and that is Contemporary Worship.
Now before you say “ugh” and close this post, know that not so long ago I was a huge skeptic. In my mind Christians were a bunch of hopeful hypocrites that couldn’t get a grip…couldn’t face that fact that they would die and that was that. I won’t get into my whole conversion story here in this post, but suffice it to say there came a point when I realized that I was fighting gravity trying to force things make it on my own…and in effect, fighting God. That was much too hard.
Among the “Top 40 Christian Worship 2017” songs (that’s what I Google to get a nice mix) here’s some song lines that really speak to me. Even if you aren’t a believer I have to tell you these artists are phenomenal and exude hope. And who doesn’t need hope?
For both those who have endured pain and caused it:
“If you need freedom or saving He’s a prison-shaking Savior.” Chain Breaker by Zach Williams
For those who think they can manage on their own without consulting with the Big Guy:
“Sometimes I gotta stop and remember that your God and I am not.” Thy Will by Hillary Scott
“I try to take life back right out of the hands of the King of the world.” “King of the World by Natalie Grant
For those who feel they are unworthy of being loved:
“You came for hypocrites, even one like me.” Passion my Victory by Crowder
For those who tend follow the ways of the world and ignore their creator:
“One by one the enemy has whispered lies and led them off as slaves” and “…by Your spirit breath upon them show the world that you alone can save” Come Alive by Laura Dingle
“In this obsession with the things this world says makes us happy, can’t see the slaves we are in all the searching and the grasping.” Christ in Me by Jeremy Camp
For those who wonder who made what and how:
“Say the word and there is light. Say the word and dead bones rise. Every start and end hangs on Your voice. For Your word never returns a void.” Say the Word by Hillsong United
For those who need strength everyday strength and support:
“You are the anchor when my sails are torn. Your love surrounds me, in the eye of the storm.” Eye of the storm by Ryan Stevenson featuring GabeReal
For those who are trying to get past a terrible past remember you are precious to God and He doesn’t want you to suffer as you are. Sure he could have intervened in all that happened, but that involves controlling man all the time and he doesn’t go there. These next three are REALLY good:
“Let the shadows fall away, step into the light of grace. Yesterday’s a closing door, you don’t live there anymore…” Tell Your Heart to Beat Again by Danny Gokey
“I see you dressed in white, every wrong made right, I see a rose in bloom at the sight of you, oh so priceless.” Priceless by For King and Country
“No matter the hurt or how deep the wound is, no matter the pain still the truth is,…the cross has made you flawless” and “Like a hero who takes the stage when we’re sitting on the edge of our seats saying it’s too late, well let me introduce you to amazing grace…God’s grace” Flawless by Mercy Me
If you don’t typically listen to this stuff, I really suggest giving it a try…especially the last set I quoted. “Flawless” in particular speaks to the broken and people like me who’ve done wrong. It’s for everybody and the video is really amazing.
